Roland
TR-707
The Roland TR-707 Rhythm Composer, introduced in 1985, is a digital drum machine that played a pivotal role in the evolution of electronic music. Unlike its predecessors, the TR-707 utilizes digitally sampled sounds rather than analog synthesis, offering a more realistic and versatile palette. It features 15 PCM drum sounds, including bass drum, snare drum, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, rimshot, cowbell, hand clap, and tambourine, all with a 10-voice polyphony. The machine provides 64 programmable patterns, which can be sequenced into four songs, and offers real-time and step-time programming modes. Notably, the TR-707 includes shuffle and flam effects, enhancing its rhythmic capabilities. It supports MIDI In, Out, and Thru, as well as DIN Sync and trigger outputs, allowing for seamless integration with other Roland gear and external devices. The TR-707's distinctive sound and user-friendly interface have made it a favorite among producers in genres like house, acid house, and pop, with artists such as Aphex Twin, Marshall Jefferson, and INXS incorporating it into their music.
