The Roland TR-909, introduced in 1983, is a groundbreaking drum machine that revolutionized electronic music, particularly within genres like techno, house, and acid house. It was the first Roland drum machine to incorporate MIDI, enabling seamless synchronization with other electronic devices. Combining analog synthesis for some sounds and digital sampling for others, the TR-909 featured iconic drum sounds, such as the analog bass drum and snare, and digital hi-hats and cymbals. Its 16-step sequencer, shuffle and flam effects, and distinctive sound made it a favorite among producers and DJs. Despite initial commercial challenges, the TR-909 has remained a key influence in shaping the electronic music landscape.
